Sovieshu comes up with the ultimate plan to have everything he ever wanted, but it involves divorcing the empress, elevating Rashta to be his empress for long enough for their child to be a legitimate heir, then to divorce her and have Navier back as his empress. But rather than let anyone else in on his plans, he sets a few things in motion and is overheard by Navier who doesn’t fully know how to handle the idea of her husband wanting to divorce her. She instead leaves the capital for a few days to check in on a mage student she’s been sponsoring who has reportedly been losing her magic, and while there, she runs in to King Heinrey who has escaped his kingdom for a short getaway. Heinrey yet again begs Navier to become his queen. In the meanwhile, Navier’s brother, Kosair, is banished for what the emperor supposes is conspiring against Rashta.
There is so much drama happening and it’s really starting to get entertaining! It definitely feels like we are really close to the scene from volume one where Navier asks Sovieshu for a divorce, and if that’s the case, it’s going to be a reversal and such a moment of vindication for her. Sovieshu wants to have all his cake but just when he's ready to eat it, it's going to be taken from him. I sincerely hope things fall apart with Rashta as well and that the plots to try to make her legitimate with noble parents also falls apart so that everything can unravel! The illustrations continue to be stunning on every page, but the writing and intrigues on top of intrigues are really superb in this series.
