Navier decides to ask Duke Kaufman about the mysterious love potion she received since he has a background in magic. The Duke demonstrates the potion and reassures Navier that he is in no danger of permanent effects, but it turns out to be much stronger than the Duke anticipates. He gets into an altercation at first with Heinrey, and later with Emperor Sovieshu himself because of his jealousy! The whole affair puts Navier’s trade talks with Hwa in jeopardy and gives Sovieshu some outrageous ideas about Navier’s love life. Heinrey must return to his own kingdom after some devastating news about his older brother's health. Navier finds herself friendless at a desperate time as Rashta becomes entangled high society drama that ends with an attempt on her life and Navier convincing Sovieshu not to immediately execute the man responsible.
Navier continues to be the picture of calm in the face of all manner of horrible treatment, and she has some of the best ways to subtlety insult and get back at Rashta. While it seemed like Sovieshu had come back around a little bit in the last volume with Navier's birthday trip, he’s back to pretty much always taking Rashta’s side when the two come toe to toe. Rashta gets herself into a hole in this volume, and I can’t wait to see how that will all crumble around her. I also love how the Duke's potion backfired on him, but really hope Navier uses it for her personal gain, even though she's a decent person and probably won't.
