This volume is a two-part collection of short stories centered on the island of Okinawa. The first half focuses on the island’s inhabitants as they experience the harrowing months of the Battle of Okinawa. Some of these stories are based on Higa’s own family history. The second collection mainly focuses on life after the battle and loosely stars a yuta priestess who performs several rites to heal the spiritual soul of the island or the people.

A young girl flees her war-torn home in the hopes of finding gold in a cold wilderness of what seems like Alaska. There, she finds the Native women are abused, often disfigured and one of their eyes brutally taken, and forced into being guides for treasure hunters who want nothing more than to exploit the land and leave it as destroyed as its Native people. The young lady befriends a three-legged dog that has also been disfigured and abandoned by a treasure hunter, and seems to have a giant wolf spirit watching her and the treasure hunters. Despite nearly starving, an even harsher winter coming, and finding no gold, she decides to partner with some of the Native women to enact revenge on the exploitive men and finally stand up for her village as well.

The premise sounds improbably - a boy who is half human, half goat, a creature called a Cloven - but it somehow works. Tuck is a genetically engineered being whose lab "father", Dr. Langner, bred many failed experiments in a quest for what he thought was ending world hunger. Turns out, the bank-roller of the experiments was looking for a perfect warrior. Aren't they always. Tuck escapes from the lab where he is being experimented on, and finds a park full of others of his kind - ones that Dr. Langner had released from almost certain death years ago. Though alternating the narrative from present day to flash backs, the reader learns that Tuck's life isn't really what he remembers it as. |
