Seth is a young wizard apprentice who knows his life's calling is to fight Nemesis - large magical creatures that wreak havoc on humans and their towns. And Seth is going to do this by harnessing the power of Fantasia! Seth, like all wizards, is "infected" - meaning he has been touched by fantasia and it gives him powers but manifests physically. In addition to his tiny horns, Seth can also use Fantasia without special gear, unlike other wizards. However, wizards and Nemesis are both hunted by The Inquisition, an organization that believes wizards are as unnatural as the beasties they fight against. Because of this struggle, Seth determines to find the "home" of all Nemesis, a place referred to as "Radiant", so that he can eradicate them and stop this battle between humans, wizards, Nemesis, and The Inquisition.

This story begins on a peaceful island off the coast of Japan, where two young people vie against each other to be stronger, faster, better. One is the Kenichi, the son of a great samurai, and the other is Hana, a Korean refugee and outcast. Then, a strange Shogun lands on their shores and demands fealty in return for protecting the island from the oncoming horrors. The villagers try to refuse, but it becomes clear that the horrors are forces that they are not prepared to face. Someone has released a mutation that causes soldiers to become zombie-like creatures bent on destroying the living. At the end of volume 1, Hana and Kenichi take different paths to combating the mutants, so it will be interesting to see where the journey takes each of them.
Fire Force is the latest from the mangaka of Soul Eater. In this latest story, we follow Shinra as he starts his career with the Special Fire Cathedral #8. Shinra is a 3rd generation fire fighter, and that gives him special powers to wield fire through his feet, making him extra fast but deadly to shoes! The Fire Squads are responsible for responding to calls of spontaneous combustion - people being consumed by the fire until they explode into deadly demons. This often results in entire buildings or blocks catching on fire. The Fire Force is also responsible with putting these people to rest, as the consuming fire is irreversible.
This is the first manga in a while where I am conflicted about my rating. I keep going back and forth on Goodreads between 3 and 4 stars.
Modern-day Asahi gets mysteriously transported to another world, where she meets the super kind-hearted Subaru. Subaru takes her back to his village, and his mother agrees to take her in until they can find her home again. However, the very next day, Subaru's mother sacrifices Asahi to the Water Dragon god in the hopes that their village will be granted more prosperity. Asahi is loud-mouthed and opinionated, so the Water Dragon god decides that of all the people the village has sacrificed, he will indeed take Asahi to be his bride, but upon her maturation (not now obviously, she's just a child!). He proceeds to take her voice away because she's irritating, but soon after Subaru finds her they escape back to the village that sacrificed her.
Jiro Azuma is a 17-year-old wanna-be-ninja being trained by his grandfather to take up the ninja mantle. He can also talk to animals. He's super fast, reckless, strong, and he has a pure heart. When black cat Rago comes along emaciated and weak, Jiro saves him and nurses him back to health. Turns out, Rago isn't a typical cat; he's a mononoke, an "evil" spirit who should be concentrating on killing humans. Rago is attacked by a demon, and of course Jiro comes to his aid, only to be stabbed through the chest with a giant claw. Reluctantly, Rago fuzes with Jiro to save his life. Now, an elite squad, known as Black Torch, with the mission to kill mononoke, become interested in Jiro, and both Jiro and Rago must prove that they can be useful to the Black Torch's mission.
Shiego, also known as Mob because of his blandness, is a junior high student with some serious psychic powers. He is employed by his mentor, Reigen, who doesn't have an ounce of power, yet runs an exorcism business. Mob gets to do all the heavy lifting, while Reigen convinces his customers that they are not only possessed, but that he is the only one able to exorcise their demons and cure them. Mob struggles to fit in at his high school, and gets swept up in a smile-cult by accident. All of his life's frustrations collectively irritate him until he explodes with a raw mystical force that's enough to flatten entire buildings.
