Rashta’s former owner confronts her at a New Years celebration, contradicting the Emperor, who assured everyone upon Rashta’s arrival that she was not a slave. As the rumors fly, Rashta tries to fabricate different rumors about a duchess in court so that attention will be moved off of her. But, her former slaver isn’t finished with her, as he reveals he is raising a child she birthed while on his estate. He and Rashta enter into a tenuous partnership where she pays him with jewels to raise the child but also do some of her dirty work. Empress Navier continues her pen-pal relationship with Prince Heinrey, reluctant to bring their friendship into public because of his reputation as a womanizer. Heinrey invites his friend, Count Ergi, to join him, and it becomes clear the two are up to something nefarious, although Navier hasn’t figured out what just yet. For her birthday Sovieshu, the Emperor, suggests a trip for just the two of them to the imperial villa, but Navier is still suspicious of any affection Sovieshu shows her after taking on a mistress.
The political intrigue continues! This whole storyline is a giant chess match of conniving, calculating folks who are trying to work and use their wiles on everyone else. It was good to see Navier use some of her Empress powers in this volume and get a few good jabs in on Sovieshu when he needed it. He often tries to have his cake and eat it too just because he's the Emperor! While it is obvious that the couple-pairing we're being shoe-horned into is for Sovieshu and Rashta to end up together and Navier and Heinrey to end up together, Navier and Sovieshu are childhood sweethearts, and we get some very tender flashbacks in this volume that kind of make me want them to work things out. That could also be false hope so that the separation hurts more later! Either way, this romance-drama continues to enthrall and keep me on the edge of my seat.
