Luffy and crew escape Roguetown as a crazy storm hits the island. Nami reads the charts for entering the Grand Line, and she learns this terrible storm is part of their chance to sail onto the Grand Line. The Merry Go sustains a bit of damage, but they finally manage to make it onto the fiercest sea of the them all. Once there, the ship is swallowed by a moaning whale, and they meet a wise sea doctor who has been taking care of this abandoned creature. The sad whale has been ramming his nose on a wall, hoping to escape, while two secretive folks have been trying to capture the creature to take its meat back to their starving village. From the old man, Nami learns her years of navigating will be mostly useless on the Grand Line as she must learn to use a Log Pose to survive the turbulent seas.
Volume 12 is subtitled The Journey Begins, as if the other 11 volumes served as more of a prologue to get us to the Grand Line finally. It feels very much like we have set up our characters and know a bit about them, we know the world and a bit about how it works, and now our journey begins in earnest along the Grand Line. Luffy can finally start his adventure to become the King of the Pirates, which may mean the adventures are going to get more serious and the stakes are going to be higher in this area. For libraries looking for a good stopping point, this volume doesn't entirely end at a clean stopping point, but it's as close as you're going to get without having to go into the next adventure.
