Sanji finally agrees to come with Luffy, which is great for many reasons: many volumes ago, Nami made off with the Merry Go, so they’ll have to take Sanji’s boat to track her down. Luffy already sent Usopp, an injured Zolo, and one of the pirate hunters after her, so the second pirate hunter, Sanji, and Luffy are on their tail now. But Nami may be going into a Lion’s Den. She had expressed interest in a great reward on a dangerous pirate, a Captain of the Fish-Men named Arlong. His brute strength makes Don Krieg look weak, and he has a crew of mutant fish-men with special abilities and strengths under his command. Nami’s treachery may run a bit deeper than everyone originally thought as Usopp uncovers her family home in a small village on the same island as the Arlong pirate compound.

Since we didn’t originally get Nami’s backstory as we had for some of the other pirates, I’m glad we’re getting to it now, and I'm also glad that Nami's history is complicated and not as full of characters to tug on the heartstrings. It's messy and shakes up the string of feel-good stories we've had so far, and serves as a helpful reminder that this story is about pirates, not just a lot of well-meaning folks who are out on an adventure. There's more than what we discover here, so readers are going to want to dive into volume 9 to see how Nami's story concludes.
