Get ready for a double-dose of world-building. After surviving the ordeal with the spider-demons, Tanjiro and Nezuko are taken to the council of the Hashira - the 12 strongest demon slayers who serve Master Ubuyashiki, the head of the organization. Most of the twelve want to kill Nezuko for being a demon, Tanjiro for not doing it himself, and they also want to punish Tomioka, who happens to be one of the Hashira, for aiding Tanjiro instead of killing Nezuko. Later, Shinobu, who is also a member of the Hashira, offers to host Tanjiro and his associates at her home to help them recover and train to get their strength back. Elsewhere, Kibutsuji, the demon king and leader of the Twelve Kizuki, interrogates the remaining Lower 6 demons on their lack of lethal force against the Hashira. Kibutsuji strengthens one of the demon and sends him on a quest to kill the Hashira and Tanjiro.
This volume has been pitched to me as “filler” in between two very dynamic story arcs, but I found it very fascinating and helpful to get some of this insight into the two warring societies. The "elements" Gotuge uses as the specialties for the types of Hashira are really interesting and non-traditional, so I'm excited to see how all of these different techniques work during battle sequences. There is a lot of light-hearted comedy as Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu train and recover their strength, and there we some bits of Zenitu’s horn dog self that come out as they train with girls.
