Raeliana secures a friendship with a marquis' wife as Duke Noah instructed her to, but no sooner has this task been complete than Raeliana finds herself kidnapped by the terrible Francis Brooks, the fiancé she desperately tried to avoid from volume one because of the ill fate he had in store for her character in this novel to begin with. But of course, Duke Noah saves the day. Now that Raeliana is safe, she believes the contract can be called off, but Noah seems to want to follow through with the fake arrangement for much longer. Her next task is to accompany Noah on a monster hunt and play the part of a doting fiancée while parties of knights traipes off into a harsh winter forest and bring back offerings of dead beasts to lay at ladies' feet. Most of the knights bring back large beasts to offer to Vivian Shamal, the fairest of the ladies, but Noah's party doesn't return on time.
Raeliana continues to navigate this world that keeps her on her toes. In this volume, she is trying to find the original protagonist of the novel, and she's coming up short. It is starting to seem, to her, that she has replaced the protagonist and affected the plot of the novel by staying alive, so now her knowledge of the story might start to prove a little outdated. The other noble ladies are constantly keeping her on her toes with their mind games, but by the end of this volume, Raeliana is starting to develop some thick skin for some of their taunting. There was a little bit more attention paid to character expression and design in this volume, and a few more panels with some atmospheric details, so I appreciated some of those elements over the first volume.
There are a few moments of violence in this volume -- one where a woman commits suicide by stabbing herself through the neck -- but the violence is done mostly of panel or done in shadow and the blood splashes into the frame, so overall it's more hinted than seen directly.
