Illustrated by Kyle Strahm
Twig is late for his very first day of his new job as a Placeling, and he just might destroy the planet because of his error! Twig is tasked with placing a jewel but nothing goes right, and the light in the jewel is gone. Now, he has to journey across the world to find the way to light it up again, and he has a very short amount of time to do it in. With his trusty friend, Splat, Twig gathers components and meets new creatures, some more helpful than others, in a journey that is as much about Twig's self-discovery as it is saving the world.
This is a classic fetch-quest with some insane stakes. Splat is by far the best part about this story with his snark and sass- he's constantly saying the sarcastic thing that was in my head. Young does a little less world-building than some readers may want. He sticks us in there with Twig and sort of explains his role and what he needs to do, but the world itself with all the magical elements are more or less established entities that don't garner explanation.
Strahm really brings this magical world to life in his illustrations, and there are some beautiful pages with talking mountains and magical creatures. There are a few scary monsters, so this might be better for a little bit older readers.
