Ruri has had a pretty hard life. Her blonde hair and blue eyes have brought her lots of attention, especially from an annoying girl named Asahi. Everyone LOVES Asahi, and Ruri always gets in trouble for Asahi’s whims. Ruri is determined to go to college and leave Asahi firmly behind her, when it turns out Asahi has gotten into a neighboring college and rented an apartment in Ruri’s building! One day, the two ladies and a few other “friends” are walking to school, and they get pulled into another world. Ruri is incensed - she can’t even get kidnapped away from Asahi! Everyone thinks Asahi is the prophesied Priestess Princess, and it’s more of the same in this new world - up until they throw Ruri out into the forest for some sort of “treason” against Asahi. Ruri picks her way along the forest until she happens upon the hut of Chelsie, an “old hag” who teaches Ruri more about this world. Ruri has much to learn, but she also wants revenge on those who treated her poorly.
Another entry in a crowded field of Isekai, this story is immensely cute and has some really great pacing. We start off with Ruri already in the Dragon King’s lap, and the rest of this volume starts to explain how she got there. By the end of the volume, she still isn’t back to where she was in the beginning, but the little stories and adventures Ruri has throughout are satisfying and interesting. The fairies are super cute and all over the story. Even Ruri’s initial plans for revenge are pretty adorable. There is also a good amount of explanation balanced with actually “showing” us how the world works through the illustrations and the characters Ruri meets.
The artwork in this story is pretty adorable and fairly detailed. Ruri’s dress is beautifully drawn with some great little details, like the lace coming out from the bottom and the bodice work. Most of the people and creatures have cute details that make them visually pleasing and not very terrifying, except for the first look at the wild boar that chases Ruri. Aside from that moment, there's nothing in this first volume that would be too elevated or inappropriate for younger audiences.
