The Japan Defense Force is reeling from the loss of one of their high ranking leaders in the continuing fight with the dangerous Kaiju No. 9. Kafka also finds himself with a piece on the back of his hand that will not un-transform from his Kaiju self. In the bowels of the Defense Force labs, a remnant of Kaiju No. 10 awakens and makes a deal with Vice-Captain Hoshina that he hopes will turn the tide against No. 9. Within the Defense Force, the scientists think they have located a candidate who is compatible to use some of the Force's weapons they've created using remnants of Kaijus, but to train to use them either results in a powerful Defense Force soldier, or death.
This volume serves the series' first heartbreak, and it's about time. Matsumoto delivers a gut-punch and does it well, and gets right back to some action and keeps the pace of intensity by putting another beloved character in harm's way as a human prototype. Now that we know the stakes are high and all the characters don't have plot armor, everything is going to be more intense, and the story has definitely gotten very real and shaken off the humor of the first volume.
