Our adventuring party continues deeper into the watery depths of Level Four. Marcille recalls a a story from her school days where she learned about building dungeons and befriended an odd but gifted magic user name Falin. Another group of adventurers catches up to the party, and they are aided by a fighter named Namari who used to be part of their group. They partially blame her for Falin’s predicament, but Chilchuck reminds them an adventurer’s ultimate loyalty is to coin, rather than friends. They all have a scary run-in with some tentacles that actually yields some delicious results even though some walk away with swollen body parts. In the end, our adventurers fight through some giant frogs to find themselves at last at the base of the Orc village they’ve been seeking.
While the appeal of this title has been the dungeon crawl and the meals the party consumes, it was refreshing and appreciated to have a trip down memory lane with Marcille and have a different narrative tenor come into the story. I hope to find out more about each character as the volumes progress. Laios also provides some wonderful comic relief with his singularly focused goal of trying all the monsters because it crosses with his low intelligence and gets him in some hot water in a hilarious way sometimes. There were still plenty of food-manga moments in this volume to satisfy those who like this series for that humor, so I appreciate when there is balance of world and character building to the series' signature cheekiness.
