Denji goes head-to-head with the Bat demon, and it’s one of his first solo fights where he can really let loose with his powers. He discovers new things about the chainsaws that protrude from his body when he fights. Afterward, true to her word, the blood demon, Power, helps Denji obtain his ultimate goal - she lets him touch her boobs. But, Denji is completely unsatisfied and thrown off for days. He discovers he may have been happier during the pursuit of his goal than he was when he finally obtains it. But, his next assignment is to take down the Gun Devil, who has killed over a million people across the world in a few short minutes. If Denji succeeds and doesn’t die, his boss, a girl he actually kind of likes, will give him a new reward of Denji’s choosing. That is, if they make it out of a cursed hotel, where they seem to be stuck on the 8th floor.
Despite this being overly violent and hormone fueled, Denji stumbles upon some really poignant life lessons in this volume. The pursuit of our dreams often makes us happier than actually attaining our dreams, and to learn that lesson with something fairly trivial speaks to how unadulterated Denji is despite everything that’s happened to him in his short life. There might be some powerful philosophical points, but this is also a gratuitously violent story that is redefining shōnen manga similarly to what Akira did. Folks will definitely be talking about this series for decades!
