Itadori and Nanami continue battling Mahito and Junpei. Itadori tries to convince Junpei to stop fighting for Mahito, and to come back and join him at Jujutsu High. He promises Junpei that he will grow as a Jujutsu sorcerer, but Mahito is more interested in trying to get Sukuna to come out of Itadori. Mahito tries to frustrate Itadori and put him in hopeless situations so that Itadori has no choice but to release the demon inside him. Back at Jujutsu High, the tournament is about to get underway, but the two teams of students have nothing but beef with each other. The visiting school of sorcerers don't believe Itadori should be left to live, much less train as a jujutsu sorcerer, and they take their frustrations out on Itadori's peers.

Gojo has a theory that curses and cursed energy are becoming more powerful and more deadly, on both sides of the fight. The higher ups with the Jujutsu Order don’t necessarily want to hear him out, but his case is proven for him with the next bad guy we meet. He can transform the soul of anything he touches, and his current delight is experimenting on humans to see how far he can take them. His latest experiment is witnessed by Junpei, who wasn’t particularly fond of the three boys he saw transformed. Mahito, the cursed spirit, takes Junpei back to his lair and reveals some of his evil plan while bonding with Junpei over the evilness of humans. Itadori and a Grade 1 sorcerer, Kento Nanami, are put on the case to investigate, and this leads to Itadori becoming somewhat of a friend to Junpei. The two bond over their love of movies. Junpei, though, is used by Mahito to get to Itadori, and tragedy strikes close to home, causing Junpei to lash out with murderous intent.
With the events on the train wrapping up, an high level demon appears amongst the wreckage and picks a fight with Rengoku. Tanjiro was wounded in the battle and is trying to concentrate on not bleeding out of the wound in his stomach, but he still senses the strength of the demon and is powerless to help Rengoku. Inosuke, who survived unscathed, is reluctant to intercede. The two watch the fierce battle and chase the demon as he escapes, fleeing from the oncoming sunrise. Tanjiro once again loses his sword. Rengoku tells Tanjiro to go to his family's estate and consult the records the other Flame Hashira have kept to see if there is any more information on the Hinokami Kagura breathing form. There, Tanjiro confronts Rengoku's drunken father, who becomes belligerent when he sees Tanjiro's Hanafuda earrings, and his starts railing about Sun Breathing.
Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu are all healed up and have fully practice their Total Concentration skill at Shinobu’s mansion, so it’s time to be on their way. Tanjiro asked Shinobu about the “Hinokami Kagura”, a special breathing style his father used to use that might incorporate fire, but Shinobu, being the Insect Hashira, doesn’t know much about flame breathing. She recommends he ask Rengoku, the Flame Hashira. Rengoku is aboard a steam train, so the three meet up with him despite Inosuke and Tanjiro being mystified by the train and mistaking it for a demon. Once aboard, Rengoku takes a liking to all of them, but they quickly fall asleep and each have their own vivid dream. These dreams are not to be trusted, as humans working for the demon Enmu have infiltrated and are trying to destroy the spiritual core of each demon slayer.
Get ready for a double-dose of world-building. After surviving the ordeal with the spider-demons, Tanjiro and Nezuko are taken to the council of the Hashira - the 12 strongest demon slayers who serve Master Ubuyashiki, the head of the organization. Most of the twelve want to kill Nezuko for being a demon, Tanjiro for not doing it himself, and they also want to punish Tomioka, who happens to be one of the Hashira, for aiding Tanjiro instead of killing Nezuko. Later, Shinobu, who is also a member of the Hashira, offers to host Tanjiro and his associates at her home to help them recover and train to get their strength back. Elsewhere, Kibutsuji, the demon king and leader of the Twelve Kizuki, interrogates the remaining Lower 6 demons on their lack of lethal force against the Hashira. Kibutsuji strengthens one of the demon and sends him on a quest to kill the Hashira and Tanjiro.

Light gets into the prestigious To-Oh university and is number one in his class, but there’s another student who tied his score, and they both deliver the freshman class address. Afterwards, the classmate reveals himself to Light as L, and tells Light he is mildly suspicious of him being Kira. This is after several days of surveillance on Light’s room, where Ryuk found all the cameras and Light behaved without suspicion. L tells Light that he wants his help in figuring out the Kira case, but he also doesn’t fully trust Light. The two tentatively form a friendship and work on pieces of the case. Then, a series of tapes are sent to a TV station, and it’s clear to the two boy geniuses that there’s another Kira out there.

We open up on the Garden of Destiny, who is visited by the Three Fates. He is unsettled by what they reveal, so he calls the rest of his family to a meeting: Despair, Desire, Delirium, Death, and Dream. The family chides Dream for his short temper, particularly in the case of his former lover, Nada, who he condemned to torment in Hell for not agreeing to become his queen. He eventually sees their side, and decides to re-enter Hell to free Nada. This might be the end of him, as Lucifer told him so on their last encounter. He says his goodbyes and readies his kingdom, but when he enters Hell, he finds it eerily empty. Lucifer meets up with him and tells him he’s let all the demons go, he’s released all the tortured, and the dead have gone back to wherever they came from. He gives the Key to Hell to Dream and peaces out, knowing the possession of the key is going to make Dream’s life miserable. Shortly thereafter, hosts of deities show up at Dream’s castle, all with a claim to the Key to Hell.
Itadori and his classmates continue to battle a special grade demon. As soon as the two are clear of the building, Itadori unleashes Sukuna to defeat the demon. But, Sukuna doesn't want to go back to sleep. He rips out Itadori's heart, and tells Fushiguro that he can survive in Itadori's body without a heart. If Sukuna changes back or Itadori wrests control from him, he'll die. Once the crew figures out that mess, headmaster Satoru Gogo decides to personally tutor Itadori because he will continue to be targeted by other demons because of Satoru's power. An upstart demon decides to interrupt their training, and Gogo decides to use his battle with the demon to explain to Itadori how jujutsu powers work. Gogo enjoys himself immensely as he shows off just how powerful he is.

Light, a high-achieving student with lots of future prospects, finds a strange notebook on his way home from school one day. Upon touching it, he can see Ryuk, a Shinigami, or god of death. Ryuk explains the basics of this notebook, which is a Death Note: if the person in possession of the Death Note writes a person’s name while picturing them in their head, they will die of a heart attack within minutes. Light decides to try the Note out on a couple of “deserving” criminals - ones who have committed some pretty violent offenses. After discovering what he can do with the Note, Light puts himself on a path to rid the world of evil. It doesn’t take long before people begin to notice; the news media and citizens gossiping about all the deaths believe it’s Kira, a god of death wreaking vengeance on the world. It also doesn’t take long until the police get involved. A crack detective-by-hobby, similar to Sherlock Holmes, takes on the case and helps the Japanese Police continue their investigation. With this young ace on his tail, Light has to be extra careful about how he conducts his Death Note business.
