Yuma, Mikumo, and Amatori have joined the Tamakoma branch of Border, and their hope is to rise to the level of S-Rank so that they can be chosen for a mission to the Neighbor home world. We learn that Yuma, as well as Jin, possess Black Triggers, the strongest of all triggers, and Border wants to take Yuma's trigger from him. But, Black triggers are made when someone sacrifices their life for you, so transferring of Black Triggers is nearly impossible. Yuma and Jin both tell the story of who sacrificed for their black triggers: for Jin, it was his mentor; for Yuma, it was his father during a battle when he was young, preserving Yuma as a twelve-year-old. Yuma also has a limited amount of time to solve the problem of his preserved body, because it is deteriorating. We also learn that Yuma's side-effect is really handy, especially when it comes to dealing with the squads from other Border branches who come to steal his black trigger!
Osamu meets up with a young girl named Chika, who is the younger sister of one of Osamu's friends, previously killed by a Neighbor. Chika has a strange gift - she seems to attract Neighbors exorbitantly! Yuma sheds some light on the case, and it turns out that Chika's Trion levels are off the charts! He also explains that Neighbors come to Earth to capture humans because they need to use them as Trion batteries, so there's a chance that Chika's brother is still alive. As Yuma explains everything, another Border team comes to take him out, but they are woefully unsuccessful. Osamu believes that neither Yuma nor Chika will be safe at this rate, so he decides to come clean Border command and demand protection for his friend.

In this story, we follow Amala, a warrior of the Kingdom of Arcadia. She joins forces with hero Brycemere to take out the big bad. But, Amala has a mind of her own and that's NOT a good thing. As it turns out, he's a player, and she's an NPC, and she fights against the player character no matter how many times he reloads from the save point. Amala's creator, Rebecca, tries to fix Amala, but for better or worse, Rebecca put too much of her own self into the character, and thus accidentally created A.I. Amala transcends to different levels of existence in a sort of Steven Spielberg's A. I. type-feel.

The premise sounds improbably - a boy who is half human, half goat, a creature called a Cloven - but it somehow works. Tuck is a genetically engineered being whose lab "father", Dr. Langner, bred many failed experiments in a quest for what he thought was ending world hunger. Turns out, the bank-roller of the experiments was looking for a perfect warrior. Aren't they always. Tuck escapes from the lab where he is being experimented on, and finds a park full of others of his kind - ones that Dr. Langner had released from almost certain death years ago. Though alternating the narrative from present day to flash backs, the reader learns that Tuck's life isn't really what he remembers it as.

This is a universe where samurai are legends of science fiction. Samurai are cyborgs with spine-like keys that give them their powers. There are also key holders that can be controlled with bone handles of the samurai's sword. Then there are lock balls. Then there are video games, bad guys bent on stealing lock balls so they can become samurai and princesses. There's a talking cat from the order of the dog. There's a cybernetic dog who can only meow. And there's a person so isolated, they can't decide what gender they are.

Oh no, they did NOT end it like that! Sea of Stars follows a dad, Gil, and his young son, Kaydn. Gil is a space trucker who has Kaydn on board for his latest mission, following the death of Kadyn's mother. The ship is attacked by a giant monster, and Kaydn gets a mystical set of powers after a chance encounter with a staff as the ship is breaking up. The two are separated, and Kadyn finds he can swim through space, he doesn't require oxygen, and he's super strong! Suddenly, the boring-ness of space is gone, and all he wants to do is play. Contrasting his story is that of Gil, who is set adrift, finds a derelict ship with a murder-y cop bot named Kyle, and crash lands on a planet infested with baddies. Volume one has a serious cliff hanger that will leave you really wishing that wasn't the last page. |
