Norman's diabolical plan to eradicate the demons gets underway in this volume, despite Emma and Ray racing to the capital to try to stop him. First, Norman and his team blow up the bridges into the Demon Capital, so escaping is going to be tricky. Then, they invade the palace and pit the demon nobles up against each other along with their ally demon, Geelan, We also get all of the backstory on Geelan and how he came to be banished. Meanwhile, Emma and Ray navigate the demon capital trying to get to the castle to stop Norman before he goes too far. The Demon Queen, Legravalima, proves to be a hugely formidable foe, and her strength proves how she has managed to stay on top in a violent demon society.

Emma and Ray have entered the playground of one of the most powerful demons in the world. They are there to renegotiate The Promise, the agreement between humans and demons that set the world up the way it is today. Norman is also prepared to march with a group of super-soldiers, who look strikingly like the incredibly strong Adam, and he is planning on taking his forces to the Imperial Capital of the demons. He sends Gilda and Don to find the “Evil-Blooded” demons, under the pretense that he wants to protect them from the war that is about to break out with all demon-kind. Don and Gilda know, however, that Norman wanted to get rid of the two nice demons, so they have to find a way to keep Sonja and Mujika safe. Emma finally cracks the riddle that will lead her to making a new promise, but she may have to sacrifice something much more than she’s willing in order to get it.
Fifteen of Japans most ultimate high school students are accepted into this year’s Hope Academy, one of the most elite high schools in the country. But, once they all get there, they realize this is the beginning of a sick game meant to pit them against each other in life or death situations. The game they have to play is stay forever at Hope Academy, where they will have food and a room and entertainment, or they have to kill one of their classmates in order to “graduate.” Not only do they have to kill a classmate, they have to do it without anyone else knowing. The class must conduct a trial where everyone votes for the culprit. If they vote correctly, only the culprit will die, and the rest continue to live on in Hope Academy. If they vote wrong, the entire class will die and the culprit gets to "graduate" and walk free.

Akira spent three years of his life post college working for a company that, on the surface, professed to caring about their employees, but the long hours, multiple-day marathon work sessions, and the attitudes of the bosses say otherwise. The only thing making it slightly bearable is the crush he has on a lady in accounting. One day, Akira wakes up and finds tons of people have been turned into zombies! Rather than be stressed about a zombie apocalypse, Akira is just relieved he doesn't have to go back to his horrible job. What's more is his crush was also turned into a zombie, so there's really no reason to go back! Akira decides to make a list of all the things he wants to accomplish in his limitless spare time before becoming a zombie. On a beer run to a neighborhood market, he runs into another non-zombie - a pretty beautiful girl with great survival instincts. She waves off Akira's offer to team up, and we see a glimpse of her life, where she has made a list of 100 ways to avoid becoming a zombie.

While still on their trek to a new safe location provided by Mr. Minerva, a few of the kids have to break into a mass production farm to steal medicine for Chris, who isn't doing so well. For some of them, this is the first time they've seen the inhumane treatment of children at a mass production farm. Not everything goes according to plan, and Emma’s life is seriously threatened. After the raid on the farm and the administration of medicine, the group finally makes it back to the base of their mysterious supporter, but it’s not the William Minerva they expected they'd meet - it’s someone from the past at Grace Field House.

Emma and her family have to abandon their shelter after the assault from the Ratri clan. The kids find a temporary shelter in the woods from back before they found the shelter, but that becomes compromised when they realize that they are being watched by mechanical owls. One of the kids reveal that, just before they left, a message came through from some possibly allies and they were given a place to travel to, once again, in hopes of finding some human-sympathizers and allies. It isn't an easy feat to move the large group of children through a demon-infested forest, but Emma, Ray, and the rest are able to start their trek and protect everyone from rabid, hungry demons.
After the death of his mother, musician Erik travels back home for her funeral and stumbles upon a mystery of her past. Erik enters his mother’s study late at night and finds a ghoulish figure clutching a photograph of a strange musician. The man in the photo captivates him, and he chalks the ghost up to grief. Erik begins to dig into who the musician could be, and his search leads him to the former owner of a jazz club in New York. A room full of mementoes from the club give Erik some clues into the man’s identity, but furthers the mystery of the ghoul who now haunts him.

In a successful opera house in France, Christine Daaé enjoys her first experience as a Prima Donna. She has always been an understudy, or a silent dancer, but something about her singing has changed recently. The transformation sparks the curiosity of one of the opera’s benefactors, Monsieur Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny. He visits the starlet backstages but finds not everything is on the up and up. Through following Christine and many clandestine meetings over many weeks, he discovers a mysterious entity has been visiting her dressing room, claiming to be the Angel of Music, and training Christine’s voice. Christine, at first, believed her departed father had sent the Angel to her, but she discovers, to her horror, that the Angel is in fact the Opera Ghost, a figure of legend who has been wreaking havoc and placing demands on the Opera staff for quite a while. Raoul is determined to save Christine from Erik, the Opera Ghost, but he’ll have to overcome some great obstacles in order to do so.

Chioma is a Chicago cop visiting her grandmother and grand aunt in Nigeria. It rains for three days, and a little boy with his scull bashed in stands on the doorstep. Chioma opens the door, and the little boy touches her hand, sizzling her flesh, and declares, “tag, you’re it!” She is it, indeed. The elders all become fearful for Chioma; lizards start stalking her everywhere she goes; shadows eerily creep behind her, just out of sight. Then, one night, Chioma is attacked by supernatural forces and undergoes a transformation unlike anything she could have imagined.

Emma, Ray, Don, Gilda, and two kids from Goldy Pond begin a search for the Seven Walls, something that Mr. Minerva told them to find in order to rework The Promise and potentially close down all of the factories. There are some significant time jumps as the group has to travel around the demon territory chasing down leads, but just shy of two years after the escape, the group finally cracks the code and discovers the entrance they were searching for. This has given plenty of time for the enemy to find them as well, as the Ratri clan has sought out every shelter and supporter to track down the wayward “food”. |
