Vol 1: The Promise, illustrated by Nick Dragotta, lettered by Rus Wooton, colored by Frank Martin Jr
Three of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse have been reincarnated as children in a nation that very slightly resembles the United States in a bizarre future. One of the Horsemen is nowhere to be seen, and the other three set off to find and kill him. We move to another scene where a man, dressed in an all white Wild West outfit, extorts information from a barkeep in exchange for the man’s life. What our mysterious man in white receives is a list of "The Chosen", the seven people who can bring about the End of the World based on the teachings of "The Message". The man in white is Death, and he’d very much like for the world not to end.

A collection of short stories by the famed horror mangaka, which include: a creepy recording of a singer from beyond the grave; a curse that causes many small holes to open up on the skin; an alien-looking model cast in an independent film to the detriment of cast and crew; giant replicas of people's faces chase them and try to hang them; a mansion with a family strung up like marionettes; a man with a nighttime dream that gets progressively longer; a girl who experienced trauma that left her mind shattered is coaxed into marrying and procreating to continue a family line; a residence above a barbecue restaurant drips with oil, and the proprietor may be using that to season his family members; and a bonus revisiting to the alien model storyline with a girl who is afraid cropped photos of her will result in her limbs being severed.
The four members of the Blue Team - Goggles, Specs, Headphones, and Bobble hat - battle against other squads to see who can cover the most area with their team’s ink color. These competitors are in humanoid form, but they can also change into their other form: inklings, little squid-type creatures. The Blue Team members are all lower ranked than their opponents, but through hard work, teamwork, lots of practice, and some silliness, they prove they can hang with the best S rank teams.
Gon and his new friends are still within their hunter trials, having completed one phase of several. In Phase Two, the applicants have to please a pair of Culinary Hunters who specialize in gathering ingredients from strange places and foraging for what they need to survive. The two judges have vastly different trials and pallets to please, and many of the applicants are weeded out in this phase. Afterwards, Gon and Killua are given a special chance to get their hunter’s license going up against the Chairman in an effort to take a ball away from him, but his speed and agility prove to be too much for the two of them. In Phase Three, the remaining applicants have to reach the bottom of a tower. The four acquaintances, plus Ton (the slimy guy who has been trying to mess people up all trial), all end up in the same challenge - Majority Rules - and they find out what Ton's motivation has been in trying to sabotage the trial.
Makoto and her cat Chito move in with her distant relatives away from Tokyo in Aomori, a small town in the countryside of Japan. There, Makoto hopes to complete her training as a witch. Her family knows about her powers, but Makoto isn’t supposed to talk about it to non-relatives. That doesn’t stop her from telling Nao, a girl at her school she befriends. Makoto often gets lost around Aomori, so occasionally she’ll take Chito with her, who has walked the neighborhood enough to not get lost. Makoto does some basic magic with her young cousin, Chinatsu, who isn't a witch. The two, along with Kei, Chinatsu's older brother, ready an abandoned plot of land to make a garden, as growing plants is part of Makoto's study of magic. Makoto's sister, Akane, also makes a surprise visit to see how Makoto is settling in, and Akane accidentally has Makoto unleash a pretty powerful spell to summon crows.

He starts to earnestly learn art in the hopes of making it into Tokyo University of the Arts, a highly competitive, but only public, university dedicated to Art.
Mia and Theo continue to try to get the fortune teller to help them find a magician to help Mia, but the fortune teller refuses once more. Mia and Theo catch him after he's been ruffed up by a street gang, and Theo gives him some salve to help with his bruises. They learn that his name is Nora, and he has a "partner", a little ferret named Tama who "helps" Nora locate lost items. It turns out, Tama is extremely attracted to shiny things, and usually steals them, then Nora uses his "fortune telling" powers to help "locate" the item that Tama has stolen. The thugs come back and kidnap Nora. Mia, Theo, and Tama plan to rescue him. They turn out not to be the best rescuers, and Mia once again loses control of her magic, making it even more pressing that they find someone to train her.

God has a team of designers at his disposal who will make all manner of creatures based on a very limited scope - things like a mammal able to eat leaves off tall trees (which results in a giraffe), or something “adorably uncute” (which results in the koala). The designers, all sharing a name with one of the planets, each have their quirks when designing animals: Mr. Saturn’s greatest invention was the horse, something he tries to reinvent for everyone challenge to limited success; Pluto makes terrifying animals but is also very fixated on how her creations will reproduce; Neptune makes all kinds of amphibious animals; and Jupiter has become the official taste-tester, making sure delicious animals have extra protection or defense mechanisms. At the end of each chapter is a note on the main, real, animals that were designed, providing some educational content for readers. |
