Aria continues her machinations to ruin her sister Mielle’s life by trying to undermine the relationship between Mielle and her future betrothed, Oscar. Instead, Aria finds out many of her plans are backfiring. She discovers the business tips she gave to her stepfather in volume one were attributed to Mielle, so the nobility believe Mielle to be a budding economic genius. Mielle also sends maids to “help” Aria, who are actually spying on her, so Aria uses the hourglass to pick out one of Mielle’s maids who is young and potentially easy to win over. At a spring festival, Aria runs into Lord Asher again and tried to steer clear of him, but unexpected explosions have them running for safety together.
There is so much court drama and societal machinations in this title that it can be a little difficult to keep everyone sorted and see the consequences of actions from volume one popping up in volume two, but steadfast readers who pay attention to detail will be rewarded with some payoffs of all the moving parts. Aria doesn’t use the hourglass too much in this volume for anything too exciting, so I’d love to see it be built in for more suspenseful plot points.
This title is rated for teen and is mostly on the grade 8+ scale because of the attention-to-detail needed to keep all of the characters and situations straight to fully enjoy everything. If you have younger readers who enjoy political thrillers with lots of intrigue, this might be a good fit for them. There are conversations of engagements and having children as a natural progression of marriage, and Aria occasionally contemplates murdering Mielle as an end-goal of her plans for revenge.
