Yuri is, for all outward signs, a normal student who just passed her entrance exams and is looking forward to relaxing and getting closer to her crush, who finally kissed her. But her life takes a terrible turn when a murderous queen kidnaps her from her time and transports her back to the ancient Hittite empire to become a sacrifice in a ritual! Somewhat fortunately, a prince with an eye for beauty rescues her from the ceremony, but Yuri's not sure she's safer with the lecherous Prince Kail. Somehow, she has to find a way back home while surviving in the literal bronze age!
This is a classic shōjo series that was originally popular in the mid 1990s, mid 2000s for North America, and it has been out of print for many years. Fans have been eagerly anticipating a reprint, and VIZ has finally answered the call.
As with many older series, the question always begs as to whether it stands the test of time. The main storyline is timeless, would have broad appeal to today's readers who are looking for a long-form adventure romance. However, something that doesn't hold up is the amount of sexual violence against the female lead that was a prevalent trope when this was originally published, though in this story, it fits in with the time period and theme of wartime aggressions. In more modern shōjo stories, the amount of violence has decreased or is not shown on the page as frequently. Shinohara draws nudity without much detail, and all of it is from the waste up. The overall story doesn't suffer dramatically, so this would still be a purchase to consider if libraries have need of a tried-and-true series that will ultimately satisfy romance readers.
