Adapted by Gabi Nam, illustrated by Harara
Letitia’s first life ended in an apartment fire, but her second life isn’t starting off so great. Her parents die when she is very young, and she is sent to live with her aunt and uncle. It turns out, her uncle has a pact with a noble northern family of demon hunters, and he must send someone of his blood to marry their son. At twelve, Letitia is chosen to join House Halstead, but the rumors are horrible! They might sacrifice her and eat her or burn alive her for being a witch. Letitia’s trip to the northern lands isn’t without incident, including finding items from Earth that have seeped into this world. When Letitia finally meets her husband-to-be, she discovers that he's supposedly cursed with a hideous complexion and wears a mask at all times. But, he's otherwise extremely cordial.
The reborn trope and coming from an abusive family is nothing new, but having common items show up is different and interesting. Erden Halstead is an intriguing character, and the mystery of his curse has me hooked into reading more to discover the origin and nature of his affliction. As the title suggests, the mask may not be needed, but we aren't sure why in this first volume. The first half has some comedic moments, but the second half settles this story more into a fantasy epic with mythical creatures, castles, battles, and more.
Harara's illustrations are full color like most manhwa, but the style employs more cartooning and relies less on elegant detailing. Don't expect to get lost in the details of every panel. The charming story makes this an easy read, so elaborate illustrations are not missed. Yen Press rates this for Older Teen, but this series so far would be fine for most high school libraries. There is some fantasy violence and some minor suggestive moments.
