Camille Severin and her cousin are potentially powerful witches in a family whose power draws from their blood and demons. Both are preparing for their coming-of-age ceremony, but Camille feels nothing but dread and unease despite years of preparation. Something feels off about her magic. Camille’s tragic past also continues to haunt her — the death of her mother and twin sister loom large over her as she relives the fire in the greenhouse that took them both and scarred her physically and mentally. The mounting pressure also threatens to consumes here -- failure is not an option for a Severin. ​

​The art throughout this volume is very beautiful. The coloring is bright and vibrant, especially the vibrant greens that pop in a world full of dark hues. Within a few pages, the Mundt creates an environment where you feel Camille’s high stakes and the pressure of her family’s expectations. Her cousin takes a bit of a back seat in the second half of the volume to make way for Camille’s journey of self-discovery, which is necessary but it’s an unfortunate punishment for a fun character. Hopefully, we see more of her in volume two. 

There is some language throughout the volume, and the characters attend a party where alcohol is present and Camille overindulges.
