Kaiju no 8 vol 8 by Naoya Matsumoto

Reno has been matched with a Numbers Weapon, a suit infused with Kaiju No. 6’s power, and he has one major field test to prove he can handle the power and not overload his own body before they put the suit back into storage, potentially forever. Iharu is upset that Reno has been matched and not him, but he still goes to give support to his compatriot when he’s in need. Elsewhere, Vice-Captain Hoshina takes Kafka out for some hand-to-hand combat training without weapons of transformations as Kafka is going to need to rely more on his own fighting prowess in the coming days.

Reno and Iharu have very different personalities, and Matsumoto has done a decent job to make them distinct characters, but once their masks go on and they start fighting, it’s a little hard to tell them apart! The first part of the book was challenging because of this and the two blondes zooming around, but I eventually sorted everything out. I was glad to see Hoshino having some heartfelt moments with Kafka now that things are out in the open, which really shows Hoshino’s big heart.
