In this run of Doctor Strange, Jason Aaron explores the cost on the Sorcerer Supreme to perform the magic he does to keep the world together. He continuously puts off paying the "toll" for the magic he uses, which manifests into a being kept in a basement room, "affectionately" named Mr. Misery because of the amount of pain he wants to inflict upon Doctor Strange. Meanwhile, a society called the Empirikul, who prioritize science and are determined to exterminate magic, sets its sights on Earth and to destroying all objects imbued with magic, as well as disrupting the "lead lines" of magic that flow through the Earth's crust. As Doctor Strange powers dwindle, his enemies rise up to take over New York City, and Strange must gather the last bits of magical items, and ally with some of NYC's finest heroes, to stop his worst foes from winning.
