After a shocking discover on a remote island, dinosaurs that were once thought to be extinct re-emerge into the public zeitgeist. Several rounds of genetic experiments help bring back other species, and the overall popularity lead to dinosaur zoos sprouting up across Japan. But a tragic incident fifteen years prior to the opening of our story soured the public on dino parks, and now they're in decline. Suzume Suma starts her first day as a Dino zookeeper at a small, underfunded and slowly dying dinosaur park where she hopes to build a bridge between the animals and their human visitors by bringing out their stories and showing the personalities of each animal at the park.
There is a lot to love about this well-researched, balanced story that brings together modern zoology with archaeology. There is definitely strong appeal for any readers who grew up with a fascination with dinosaurs, which is probably quite a lot of us. This story will definitely appeal to readers who grew up fascinated with dinosaurs, which is probably quite a few. Kinoshita balances the dino facts with some compelling human characters, though Suzume comes across as a little naive in this first volume. Hopefully, she gets a little more page time to develop later on. Each chapter ends with an article from Shin-ichi Fujiwara, an actual paleontologist who was the research consultant for the series, so there are plenty of tidbits and facts throughout to add interesting educational content through modern science and dinosaur information.
Seven Seas rates this series for Teen (13+). The scientific information is pretty advanced for lower grade levels, and there is some frank information about food chains. Some advanced readers could be able to handle the scientific columns provided by Fujiwara and be fine with understanding that carnivores eat meat.
