When she wasn't going to school and trying to pretend to be a normal teenager, young Yan Tieh Hua performed with her family in a classic Chinese theater or learning her family's signature fighting style. Little did she know that an all-out battle on stage with her mother during a performance, begging for the opportunity to be normal for a moment, would be the last before her entire world would turn upside down. Humans have all but destroyed the world and now live in hiding. Creatures across the world hunt and eat humans as tasty treats. One day, a guardian forest spirit, himself towards the end of his life, discovers a human child alone in the woods bound and abandoned. Moved to kindness, the guardian golem determines to bring the poor creature to other humans, rather than leave it to the ravenous others lurking in the woods. Somali is filled with wonder and a passion for tasting lots of dishes that amuses the forest spirit and brings out a defensiveness they didn't know they had, and the two venture forth through the wild world in search of Somali's people.
In this magical tale, Alpi is a young girl who has a very important task. Great spirits bestow blessings on the regions where they live, but when they die, their bodies infect the land with terrible energy and plague the very people they once blessed. Soul Senders travel far and wide and help to send these spirits on to the afterlife and cleanse the land, but they do so at a great physical cost. Alpi and her companion, Pelenai, travel to several places and help them restore their lands, but one village has disrupted the natural order and twisted how their spirit should work with their land. Alpi is placed in a terrible position, and to uphold her duty as a Soul Sender, she might have to make a terrible choice.
