William is in the middle of the battle of his life, and he's pulled into a realm between worlds by his god, Gracefeel, the God of Flame. He asks for her blessing and help in defeating Stagnate, the God of Death. He's returned to his world just in time to save his family, but, in the end, he's not entirely successful. Now, he must travel the world and spread the light of Gracefeel and help people in need. Will meets Menel, a half-elf, who later leads a raiding party against a neighboring village. Gracefeel warns Will in time to stop all casualties. Will then sets out to help the village of the raiders, which has been overtaken by demons. After setting everything straight, Will and Menel travel to Whitesail, one of the largest cities in the Southern Continent. There's no rest for them, though, as the city is attacked by a wyvern.

The hopeful candidates of the First-Class Mage's exam begin their first test: capture a Stelle bird without killing it. The Stelle is a tricky creature, though, as it can detect mana and flees from anyone with a lot of it. Frieren's two partners bicker constantly about the best way to capture a bird. Fern and her partners capture one quickly, but then have to ward off the other teams as they figure the easiest way to capture a bird is to take one that's already been caged. One of Frieren's companions has command of water, so they use their combined efforts to imbue most of the water sources in the area with mana. Then, Frieren sits by the only water source not imbued, and waits for a Stelle to come along. Other teams then try to attack Frieren and her teammates, without much success.
