It isn't long before current gang members recognize him, but rather than sucking him back into the life, others always get dragged along on househusband duties.

Taichi has to deal with the immense guilt from Toma's broken leg. If Taichi hadn't tried to save the kitten from being run over by a car, Toma wouldn't have tried to say Taichi, and he wouldn't have an injury that completely ended his baseball season, just when the team on the cusp of qualifying for the summer tournament. Futaba tries to console Taichi and discovers just how much she cares for him. Taichi and Toma lash out at each other for the injury - Taichi claims responsibility for ruining Toma's dreams, but ultimately, the argument ends with Toma expressing that Taichi's life is more important than his dreams of becoming a professional athlete. Taichi begins to understand some of the feelings Toma has been unable to express before, and he doesn't quite know what to do about it all.
It’s time for Aohama High’s Sports Festival. Toma is pressured into being the cheer squad captain by all the girls in the class, and he makes Futaba and Taichi his vice captains! The two vice captains must perform a major cheer before the last sporting event, a relay that Toma is running. Futaba freezes and forgets all the steps, but Taichi saves her with his cheering and drumming. Then, baseball season gets underway and Toma, as team captain, leads his team to victory over difficult opponents. Taichi struggles with the unasked question of why Toma isn’t planning on going to college, and if that means he’s giving up on his dream of being a pro baseball player. Later, Taichi runs into Masumi at the subway station just after she’s broken up with her boyfriend, and she asks lots of philosophical questions about the difference between romantic love, friendship, and love for someone of your same gender. So, thus, our quadrangle is complete (for those playing at home: Masumi-> Futaba -> Toma -> Taichi -> Futaba). Another cliffhanger ending will have fans gasping for volume 3.
Hachiken’s first equestrian competition is finally here, yet still amidst the planning for the Fall Festival. Hachiken likens the pressure of competing to taking a difficult exam, and this helps him focus on riding and jumping with Chestnut, his horse. Ayame Minamikujou, a competitive girl from Mikage’s middle school, is also competing in the equestrian match, and her overconfidence doesn’t hide the fact that she doesn’t understand the rules of the competition. She swears to be the rival of Mikage, even though Mikage is in a higher class than Minamikuyou. So she sets her sights on Hachiken as well. Once the competition is over, it’s time to make the final preparations for the Fall Festival, but Hachiken is litterally running himself ragged with all the different events he’s coordinating!
It’s campus cleanup time again and Hachiken finds a puppy in the trash heap! After cleaning him off, the pup becomes the unofficial mascot and guide dog for the equation club, “Vice Prez.” Later, the students go see the baseball team compete and cheer on Komaba’s pitching. Then, it’s time to plan for the Ag Festival, and the equestrian team wants to do something to showcase how cool horses are. Hachiken can’t get his horse, Chestnut, to jump, even though other riders can. He must learn a valuable lesson about himself as a rider. While he trying to get the equestrian event up and running, he overcommits to other groups’ festival offerings. The man who won’t say no must learn, or he’ll never get in the practice with Chestnut that he needs to become a great jumper!
Hachiken is now everyone’s best friend as he has come into 50 kilos of pork meat. He asks one of the teachers to help him make bacon, and while it isn’t perfect, everyone agrees, it’s delicious. Hachiken’s brother shows up again and suggests he send some bacon home to the parents to prove that he is learning a lot at his school. Hachiken reluctantly does this, and we see a glimpse of his family and get a little insight as to why he’s avoiding them. The third years are finishing up their time at Ezo Ag, and it’s time for the Equestrian club leadership to pass the reins to the younger club members. Then, it’s time to start preparing for the autumn events - baseball tournaments, finals, and a festival!
Hachiken is finishing up his summer job at Mikage’s family farm. His mother is so worried because of lack of communication from Hachiken that she sends his big brother to look for him. After proving that his dream of becoming a famous ramen chef is highly unlikely, Hachiken’s older brother decides to report to their mother that they should leave him be. Hachiken causes a disaster with the milking machine and tries to refuse the payment offered to him for his summer work, but the Mikage family won’t hear of it. Then, it’s time to go back to school, and for Hachiken that means more agonizing over the fate of Pork Bowl, the pig he named in volume two.
At the end of volume one, the group discover a brick oven, so they spend the beginning of this one fixing it up and use the ingredients from around the farm to make pizza. Hachiken is the only one who has had pizza before, so he is in charge of making it and doing all the work necessary to secure the best ingredients. Then, it’s summer break, and Hachiken has to figure out where he will work for the summer, since he refuses to go home. He goes to work for Mikage on her family farm. One night, he decides to go walk to Towari’s farm, since he and Mikage are neighbors, but he doesn’t realize how far away it is and he gets lost in the wilderness at night. Lastly, he visits Tama-Chan’s family dairy and learns some harsh realities about what happens when milk cows don’t produce enough.
For the school cultural festival, Komi and her classmates decide to do a Maid Cafe, somewhat so they can see Komi in a maid outfit, and somewhat because that’s what Komi chooses and everyone band wagons her. Somehow, Tadano is convinced to also dress in a maid costume, and he doesn’t look half bad. Najimi uses several illicit money making schemes, most involving Komi, so her class wins the best of show but has to forfeit all their profits.
Summer vacation is coming to an end, and it's the first time Komi has felt sad about that. In previous years, Summer vacation just meant a lot of boredom, but now she has friends to hang out with. Once school starts again, it's time for the Sports Festival! Everyone wants Komi to be on their team for events like the relay. The ever-competitive Yodano desperately wants to beat Komi in at least one event, but can't. During Komi's portion of the relay, she slips in the mud, and everyone is so concerned and happy she's ok that they celebrate her finish more so than the victors. We also meet Nokoko, a transfer student from a country school, who is likewise enamored by Komi.
