Ryū knows he’s a boy, but fate put him in a female body. He hates wearing his uniform at school and only really feels comfortable in his own clothes. Ryū lets out some of his frustration with street art - tagging around his neighborhood. Jin transfers into Ryū ‘s class after being absent from school so long that he’s held back a year. Jin and Ryū become friends when they both reach for the same shirt at a store. Jin is convinced that their similar taste in fashion would be critical in opening a “brand” dedicated to selling clothes. Jin offers to run all of the business side of things, like setting up the website and working on marketing, but Ryū and his art skills is responsible for designing the shirts. The two also pull in a third student, who has a passion for photography, to take photos of Jin modeling their designs to use in marketing.

Hori is a popular girl in school who does well and always has her hair and makeup done pretily. Miyamura is solitary type, sometimes assumed to be a hardcore anime fan, who gets great grades but doesn't really have many friends. When a tattooed, pierced young man shows up at Hori's home while she's in her house clothes with no makeup, she has no idea she's actually chatting with her classmate Miyamura! Both bond over their "other" sides that they don't want anyone at school to see, but they can be completely at ease with each other outside of school. Miyamura starts to help babysit her younger brother while Hori takes care of the house for her busy parents, and she becomes protective of their time, and honesty, with each other.
Sora and Tsuga are taken in by an old man in Tokyo, and he teaches them how to make the perfect croquette, then demands they work for their "room" he's giving them. The man believes Sora to be his long-lost grandson. At first, they think he’s crazy and senile, but he turns out to have a reason for taking them in. Yuushin has no place to let his anger explode now that Sora has left, so he takes some of it out on Asari, but also starts boxing again and is determined to take the pro licensing test. The test is in Tokyo, and fate brings the three friends together again, but the only one happy to see Yuushin is Tsuga.
Nasa and Tsukasa still live in the bath house after the destruction to their apartment, so Tsukasa decides she needs to help out with chores around the bath to repay them for their kindness. Tsukasa and Kaname end up getting pretty close and exchanging nicknames. Older sister Aya still hasn’t given her approval to Tsukasa, especially considering she has had a long-standing crush on Nasa, but Tsukasa starts to win her over with her delicious home-cooked meals. It also turns out that both are highly competitive video-gamers, and they challenge each other to many bouts of a new fighting game and a classic shooting game. Later, Nasa tries to plan a date for the two of them, including a stroll in a park where he hopes to hold Tsukasa’s hand and exchange some smooches.
Futaba and Taichi discuss their future plans, specifically what colleges they'd like to attend. Futaba confesses that she would like to do something with flowers, but also knows she's currently not very skilled with growing things. She tells Taichi that she would like it if they could go to college together, but this life-altering decision isn't often one to make based off of a relationship. Masumi runs in to Toma's sister-in-law, Akiko, and the two have a very meaningful conversation about happiness and being accepted by other people. Masumi admits to being a lesbian, and asks if Akiko would be able to accept such a confession from her on child, or even Toma. At the end of the school's festival day, Mami Yagihara convinces Toma to let her do his makeup, in a totally manly way of course. Mami confesses her love for Toma, but says she wants to be friends and not let her feelings spoil their ability to hang out. Toma tells Mami who he's in love with, but there's an eavesdropper who makes sure Toma's confession isn't private.
Nasa and Tsukasa finish their visit to Nasa’s parents and come back to find their house has burned down! But don’t fret, Nasa has prepared for everything with insurance, keeping his prized possessions in a safe deposit box, and storing all his documents on the cloud. They stay in a spare room owned by the family who runs the bath house, but they also need to go shopping for all new clothes. Nasa has some fun picking out outfits for Tsukasa, but things get a little awkward when she has to get new underthings. The two set up their temporary home with some old relics from the family's departed father, which include classic video games, old TVs, and some interesting furniture pieces.
Nasa wants to move into a bigger apartment so that he and Tsukasa can sleep in one large bed instead of their current arrangement - him in the bed and she on the floor next to him. In order to get a bigger apartment, they'll need a guarantor - which means Nasa is going to have to tell his parents he got married, something he's neglected to do yet. Nasa's parents insist on meeting his wife before they do anything, so the couple must travel from Tokyo to Nara. They stop over in Kyoto to do some sightseeing. Along the way, the couple realizes that Chitose, Tsukasa's "sister" is following them and trying to sabotage and/or understand why they got married in the first place. Chitose steals Nasa and demands he take her around Kyoto as if they were dating in order for her to see why Tsukasa fell in love with him.
The beginning of this wraps up the storylines that happen around Christmas time, then launches into a new story arc - Takane’s grandfather is frustrated that Takane won’t give him details about how his relationship is going with Hana. He decides he’s spoiled the kid too much, so he takes away all his stuff: freezes his accounts, sets him up in a shoebox of an apartment, gives him two cheap suits, and around $91 to live on for the month. He says Takane must climb back up to the top from the bottom to prove himself. Takane is so embarrassed by his new situation that he refuses to see Hana. But, based on the advice of her friend Okamon, Hana takes a page from Takane’s book and decides to pester him for a change.
Tsugu moved away from her small town when she was in elementary school, but now, as a high school student, her family moves back. After many years in the Osaka region (and Tsugu picking up the Osakan accent), Tsugu tries to reconnect with her group of friends from elementary school. She finds that they none of them are in the same place they were when she moved away. Tsugu has sprouted into a confident, gregarious, guitar player who tries not to let her misfortunes get her down. Yuushin, the little boy who dreamed of being a hero, has resorted to bullying others, including his former friend Sora. Sora has become ostracized and seriously thinks of ending his life because of the bullying. Tsugu feels like she is still close to Asari, but several misunderstandings and rumors spread by Asari's other friends leave Tsugu unwelcome in Asari's social circle. Tsugu tries not to let these tattered relationships get her down, and she works towards helping her friends remember their ideals they once had.
It turns out Futaba’s firework show admission to Tai-Chan worked out in the end, as the two decide to start dating. The second trimester starts, and the two have to navigate how to be boyfriend and girlfriend at school. To complicate things, Yagihara has decided she wants to be better friends with Tai-Chan. She has a reputation for stealing boyfriends, so Masumi and Futaba question the two about their budding friendship. This leads to Yagihara bearing her soul about how misinterpreted she’s been her whole life.
