Kiku is a high schooler on vacation with her mother in San Francisco, trying to find their family home in Japantown, when she gets swept back in time to her grandmother's violin recital. She travels back and forth a few more times before she is sent back to 1942, right as her grandmother's family is being shipped out to an incarceration camp. She is "stuck" in the past for a year, living in the camps alongside other Nikkei and her grandmother, who she doesn't have the courage to speak to. Back in the present, Kiku and her mother decide to research more of the family's history and the history of the Topaz, Utah camp, and to become activists against the camps at the U.S. Border for Latinx immigrants.

Eric Bittle, or Bitty, used to do figure skating and has a vlog where he discusses life and baking, but figure skating isn't an option at Samwell University. He joins the hockey team, moves into their team house, vlogs about their atrocious stove, bakes a lot of pies, and tries to fly under the radar about his crush on team captain Jack. Bitty attends practices, finds out why Jack didn't go pro when he had the chance, and learns a lot about his teammates and the type of people they are. At first, he's horrible at hockey because he can't stand getting banged into the walls, and he shies away from pretty much all physical contact on the ice. He's a lot smaller than the other guys on any team they play, but he's fast and has some tricks in his skates.

Some of the issues include the Rocket Equation, the formula for calculating how much fuel you will need to get the mass of your rocket off the ground, how to keep humans alive in space, how to safely land on Mars, and how to return home, among others.

This haunting story, based on an old Celtic folktale, is about two sisters of a king and faerie mother. The mother passes away, and the two daughters grieve very differently. When they find their father in a questionable situation with two young ladies, their opposite reactions shape the course of their lives. Dahut, the strong-willed red-head, follows in her mother’s magical footsteps and does what she can to protect the city of Ys from the sea. Rozenn, the kind and gentle brunette, retreats to the country and tries to live among the folk. She, being the heir, does not understand her sister’s life and what the grisly price has been to keep Ys prospering. The last half of the story is full of heart-breaking moments as the two sisters make many sacrifices to keep their people safe. In the end, this story has half a happy ending, but mostly chilling and unsettling. |
